Social media has many positive benefits to business, but there there are a number of secrets in regards to social media that many businesses and marketers do not like to admit. Here are a few things to watch out for.
It Isn’t Completely Free
A great advantage to social media marketing is that the marketers can play up the simple fact that it is free. While it may not cost you a dime to claim social media profiles for your business and post to them on a regular basis, the problem is that you are going to end up spending a whole lot of time while doing so.
While you are not spending money, it takes many hours to build profiles and several hours on a weekly basis to maintain even a basic presence. When you add up these hours, the amount of time that you spend on social media marketing will cost you, because time is money.
No Predictable Patterns
Regardless of how sure someone seems when they tell you that they know the secret for business success with social media, you should know that there is no way to really verify the secret to guaranteeing success in this task. Each business is truly unique, having a specific history, demographic and even a competitive landscape.
There will not be any singular strategy that could apply to everyone. When you add in that social media is always changing and other variables that may interfere with results, the predictability of success will sink in even more.
Followers Are Key For Success
When it comes to social media or any other online marketing strategy, you will see that your return on investment, or ROI, will be the bottom line. Over time, it will be good for you to execute a proper social media strategy, but the initial ROI will more than likely be terrible.
While it may take you about 15 minutes to write a good post and then submit to your followers, you have to imagine the same post, but for many more followers. Which one do you think will offer you a higher return on your investment? You should be assuming that the social media followers will all be interested in your brand. It will take a long time for your social media marketing efforts to begin paying off.
Your Social Platforms May Restrict Reach
All social media companies will have a strong interested in getting you to buy advertising. They will usually restrict the amount of reach that you can get with unpaid, organic posts. Even tough you may have about 500 followers, this will not mean that every post that you put out is going to reach those 500 people. Keep this in mind when you are thinking about the potential of social media.
Data Will Not Tell You Everything
Another major advantage of social media is the volume of data. You have the ability to probe further into user patterns, behavior and interaction, as well as demographic information. Unfortunately, the data cannot tell you everything you need to know. I will not be able to offer you any qualitative insight on how people feel about your brand, or on any specific interactions.
Additionally, data can help you to generate newer ideas that you may not have tried before. It will also not be able to give you any actionable insights unless you will be asking all of the right questions regarding that data to begin with.
